1959 Jaguar 3.4 litre Mk1
As a predecessor to the Jaguar Mk2, the Mk1 was a rather tame cat at the time of introduction. Luckily, a second engine option was soon offered next to the 2.4 litre. It is this 3.4 litre XK engine that turned the Mk1 into a very fast saloon car, capable of outrunning the contemporary Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk3.
We acquired this particular Jaguar Mk1 in California, where it sat unused for a few decades. The car requires a complete restoration at this point. With a later 3.8 litre engine, optional 4 wheel disc brakes, wire wheels and a manual gearbox with overdrive, it is a well specced car. Delivered new with an ice blue metallic body and a red interior, it is hard to think of a better colour combination on a classic like this.
Enough to dream about, but the hard truth is that this car needs work. A lot of it.
Currently presented in its third layer of weathered paint, the flaws on the body are clearly visible. Unfortunately, the brittle rubber window seals caused water to leak into the interior. Hence, the main visible areas of rust damage are to be found on the inside: the floor pan below the rear seat, the front of the driver’s side floor board and some areas in the boot floor. Some perforative rust is also visible on the lower door skins and at the front sill end plates.
The 3.4 litre was replaced by a 3.8 litre unit at some point. This engine turns by hand, but will likely need to be completely rebuilt. The gearbox shifts through all gears and feels tight.
The interior of this Jaguar Mk1 needs to be completely renovated. The odometre shows a total of 17.869 mls, which is undoubtedly at least 117.869. Two keys are present.
The car is missing a few minor parts: spare wheel, rear bumper, boot lid handle, tail light and a few smaller trim items.
A well specced Mk1 with enough potential to be brought back to as-new condition.
